Summer is officially here and hopefully you're finalizing plans for your summer vacation. You know your flight schedule or which route you're driving, which places you would like to eat, and have a list of souvenirs to buy, but what if somewhere along the way your debit or credit card gets declined?

One overlooked part of traveling is letting your bank know you're leaving on vacation. To protect you from fraud, certain transactions are blocked which results in your card being declined. So, before you start packing the bags, be sure to add these items to your to-do list:

  • Domestic Travel - Some banks have certain states blocked, or are alerted when multiple out-of-state transactions appear on an account. The best way to avoid being declined is letting your bank know when you are leaving, where you are going, and how long you will be there. With this information, the bank can allow those transactions to post and you can enjoy your vacation.

  • International Travel - In most cases, all out-of-country transactions are blocked. Again, to avoid having your debit or credit card declined, you should contact your bank before your trip. You should also try using a debit/credit card issuer that is widely accepted internationally, such as MasterCard®.

  • Debit/Credit Card Limits - Many banks have a standard daily debit card limit of $500. Depending on hotel fees, meals, and other traveling expenses you expect to have, it is best to ask your bank to temporarily increase your daily debit card limit to avoid being declined. It is also best to keep your limit increased a couple of days after returning from vacation so you do not max out the limit on your card as transactions are still posting to your account.
